Russia has been awarded with a prestigious international environmental prize
The “Young Champions of the Earth” prize is awarded every year by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to young for their outstanding ideas to protect the environment.
This year, for the first time, Russian team led by Marianna Muntianu received the prize presenting the European region for their gaming program "Plant a forest".
"Plant a forest" is a game-app for smartphones, in which players buy virtual trees for a nominal fee and plant them in the game, and on the funds collected through the application, volunteers are engaged in planting real trees in different regions. As a result of this program, in Russia over 400 thousand trees have been planted over the past few years and 5,000 school forest arboretums have been created.
The main goal of the Russian initiative is to preserve nature, forest ecosystems and promote responsible use of natural resources.
The awarding ceremony took place at one of the UNEP events on the occasion of the opening of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.
We join others in congratulating the Russian team on this achievement.
